Summary Sensorimotor training was developed by Dr. Vladimir Janda as part of a treatment approach to chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes. He noted that many of these syndromes exhibited characteristic patterns of muscle imbalance, which were manifested with changes to the central nervous system motor programming. Janda emphasized the importance of proprioception in the rehabilitation process. In order to restore normal muscle firing patterns and reflexive stabilization, he developed a specific proprioceptive exercise progression for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Sensorimotor training emphasizes postural control and progressive challenges to the sensorimotor system to restore normal motor programs in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Patients progress through static, dynamic, and functional phases using simple rehabilitation tools such as balance boards, foam pads, and elastic bands. This paper will describe the scientific rationale for the program and describe the clinical progression of sensorimotor training. & 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Positive Effects of Post-ischemic Forced Treadmill Training on Sensorimotor and Learning Outcomes Following Transient Global Cerebral Ischemia
ABSTRACT Background and objectives: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term acquired disability. It is of great importance to seek ways for improving motor, sensory, and cognitive function after stroke and brain injury. In this regard, therapeutic exercise is the most commonly used method of rehabilitation that can significantly reduce the severity of functional ...
متن کاملEffects of balance training on movement control, balance and performance in females with chronic ankle instability
Introduction: Although chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a condition characterized by numerous ankle sprains and the recurring sensation of ankle instability, which result in activity limitations and participation restrictions. Repetition based balance training protocols on type of the balance exercises may improve the deficits often associated with CAI. The objective of this study was to dete...
متن کاملThe effect of balance training on cervical sensorimotor function and neck pain.
The authors' aim was to evaluate the effect of balance training on cervical joint position sense in people with subclinical neck pain. Thirty-four participants were randomly assigned to balance training or to stay active. Sensorimotor function was determined before and after 5 weeks of training by assessing the ability to reproduce the neutral head position and a predefined rotated head positio...
متن کاملThe effect of dual-task training on balance of elderly women: with the motor and cognitive approach
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of motor and cognitive dual-task training on dynamic balance of elderly women. For this purpose, 27 old women (aged 60 -82 years) from the old people center of Birjand city were selected randomly and divided into 3 groupd based on their TUG scores. The groups comprised of cognitive dual-task training, motor dual-task training and contro...
متن کاملEffects of sensorimotor training volume on recovery of sensorimotor function in patients following lower limb arthroplasty
BACKGROUND Sensorimotor function is degraded in patients after lower limb arthroplasty. Sensorimotor training is thought to improve sensorimotor skills, however, the optimal training stimulus with regard to volume, frequency, duration, and intensity is still unknown. The aim of this study, therefore, was to firstly quantify the progression of sensorimotor function after total hip (THA) or knee ...
